Myth and Thought among the Greeks - Jean-Pierre Vernant

Probably one of the most gifted, detailed, and subtle thinkers on ancient Greece. Understanding how he weaves together the evolution of abstract and positivist thought with Tragedy, Philosophy, Religion, Myth and the formation of the polis will reward a long-term engagement with his work. These are a body of texts that I keep coming back to from time to time. I always find new things to grapple with with each revisiting.

His essay on ‘Mythic Aspects of Memory’ is a must read for anyone interested in the shifting relationships between time, memory, and the soul in Ancient Greece.
