Time Out of Joint

Time Out of Joint is my Substack newsletter. It has a guiding principle: Our culture shapes us long before we have anything to say about it. Its expectations soak in through language, habit, ritual, and silence. Before we make choices, we inherit stories. Before we speak, we are spoken of, for, and about.

If we are shaped before we can do anything about it, how do we begin to respond—not just repeat? How do we suspend those expectations so we can find other possibilities? How do we each build a moral compass tuned for the challenges of our time? How do we orient ourselves to each other and our union when political faction dominates?

You won’t find prescriptions here, nor will you find a total ‘way of living’. You’ll find genuine questions and I hope some original thinking that isn’t looking to air drop old moralities into the novelty of our time.
